Top Massage Therapy Oils

Derived from the extracted kernel of mature coconuts, coconut oil has become an increasingly popular oil for massage therapy. It’s highly moisturizing, offers great relaxation, and has medium absorption. All of these characteristics make it an attractive choice for massage therapy.

Keep in mind, however, that coconut oil has a melting point of 75 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning the room in which the massage is taking place must be at least this warm. If the temperature is below 75 degrees Fahrenheit, coconut oil will revert to a solid state, making it next-to-impossible to use for massage therapy purposes.

Peppermint Oil

If you are searching for an oil with a greater aromatic properties, you should check out peppermint oil. Studies have shown peppermint oil to be effective at treating nausea, indigestion, chest congestion, and pain. It’s an invigorating, appealing aroma that it used for both medical and leisure purposes.

When used in conjunction with massage therapy, peppermint oil becomes even more beneficial. The massage therapist will work the oil into the skin, allowing beneficial nutrients from the oil to enter the blood stream. Peppermint oil is known to contain a vast array of minerals including magnesium, calcium and iron.

Olive Oil

We can’t talk about the top oils for massage therapy without mentioning olive oil. Just a single tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil contains 1.4 grams of polyunsaturated fat and 10 grams of mono saturated fat – the good kinds of fat. Because it’s such a fatty liquid, it works particularly well for massage therapy, allowing the therapist to manipulate the client’s tissue and muscles with greater ease.

Avocado Oil

It may not receive the same level of attention as coconut oil or olive oil, but avocado oil is still a viable solution for massage therapy. Made from pressed avocado fruit, it possess a deep green color and is heavier than other oils.

So, which oil is the best for massage therapy? You really can’t go wrong with any of the oils listed here. Whether it’s coconut, peppermint, olive, or avocado, they are all excellent choices. However, I recommend trying several different oils to see which one is best suited for your particular needs. If you experience muscle aches and pains, then peppermint oil may be the best choice. If you’re looking for a deep-tissue massage, the thicker olive or avocado oil would probably be a better choice.
